THE DISCOVERY

The earliest that Frederick can remember having a interest in magic was in 1970 - 1972. (His sister would later remind him that he spent hours even before this time trying to recreate what he saw on television in front of the mirror.) The interest piqued when a friend's dad presented a bit of magic with a piece of string that was cut and then quite magically restored. He kept that piece of string for some time before finally getting the nerve to ask his friend's dad the modus operandi. Enlightened by this knowledge, he did what any kid would do and filed it away in a shoe box for later reference. There were more important things to do like reading comics and playing football, you know the routine. Little did he know how fate would deal with one even as young as him.

Already a ferocious reader in his first two years of grade school, he had read all the Greek, Roman, and Norse mythologies. (In fact, the librarian used to special order books from the purchasing department in order to keep up with his interest in these topics!) This interest in fiction lended itself to his later works in the performing arts. This interest lead self discovery as he began to send away for information on how to hypnotize and do magic. Frederick learned that this approach was not very productive so he put it on the backburner. Later in 1972 a friend by the name of Randy got back from California and showed him a bit of magic with a rope, in which the rope magically repaired itself. This seemed like real magic to him and his friend was quick to mention to him that he to could become magical if he saved up enough money to buy magic from a magic shop, no less. His desire to learn this craft was now at the forefront.

Luck would once again turn a friendly card for him as he was informed that his family would be going to California in the summer of 1973. He could hardly contain himself as he saved as much of his allowance as he could and waited for that day when dreams could come true. Arriving in California there itinerary would take them to Disneyland where he could find what he needed. Containing his excitement he inquired with one of the employees where he could find "The Magic Shop". Receiving this information, brother in tow he made a bee line for this shop. Mesmerized he stood inside and watched the people milling around a magician, a real magician who performed in his eyes real magic. Frederick literally watched for hours (8 hours to be exact!) so transfixed that he didn't notice his brother had slipped out to do some exploring of his own. Finally, he gained the courage to ask the man if he could become a magician too. The man laughed softly and then said he could providing he had brought enough magic money with him. Frederick said he would like to buy the ones he had been doing all day. Fiscal responsibility crept in as he was informed of the price of such magic. A little disappointed he was about to turn away when the magician said he could buy a magic kit for much less. Thinking about it for only a moment as he realized this purchase would use up almost all his hard earned cash. He reached into his pocket and promptly bought his first real magic kit. He was away and running when he realized his brother was no longer with him. Knowing full well what was in store for his backside, he raced outside in search of his brother this time magic kit in tow.

Finally, locating his family (including the lost sibling) who had turned from worried to angry, he was reminded that he was supposed to be looking after his brother and of the 8 hours that had passed. The entire staff of Disneyland was about to be dispatched in search of the lost little Fred. It didn't matter though, he had obtained his goal and the consequences were slight in comparison. Nothing else mattered now as he poured himself into reading and learning about magic. He would drive his family half crazy showing them again and again the magic he could do. Mother was very encouraging, his dad far less so. Over this summer he promised himself that he would become a master of all magic. (Later he would learn this was a dream that would take some doing.) Returning home he would spend all his spare time on this new found dream never really thinking about how much time he was devoting to it.

Returning to school in the fall he found his niche and began doing shows for his friends and classmates as a way of fitting in. These shows would amplify in length and complexity as Frederick began to dabble not only in closeup magic but in standup mentalism, escapes, and hypnotism. He always found a enthusiastic crowd willing to be late for class to see what he had to show them. This surprisingly did not lead to any problems at first... but soon he began hear about it.

Frederick's interest curve amplified throughout his primary school education as he added more Hypnosis, Illusions, and Mentalism to his repertoire. Everyone viewed his labor of love with intrigue with the exception of the school administration. They began calling him into the office at routine intervals to tell him he could not perform some of his acts at school due to some parents religious convictions about what he did. He assured them that this was purely entertainment but what is considered entertainment for some is serious business for others. Undiscouraged he continued mostly out of desire to meet his fellow students wishes knowing in the back of his mind the risk he was taking. This is where he learned the meaning of grace under fire and how much he really loved the art. This forging under fire would give him a focus and direction in life that could not be denied. Full support and testimony by his peers gave fuel to the fire and a direction to his life that would maintain to this day. He knew at this early age how much people meant to him and learned to love performing above almost all else.

Tragedy would strike him in 1984 when he accidently cut a finger so badly he thought he would lose it. He was informed that he would never have full use of it again. Shocked and down-trodden he learned of a huge world wide magic meet. It was the world's largest of that year and it would be held state side. Scrounging as much money as he could put together he told himself that this was it, the turning point had arrived. If there was any hope for his life work after the accident this would tell him once and for all. He would keep it to himself and remain as optimistic as he could under the circumstances. To his surprise he was taken under wing by people he had always secretly admired and respected. (Some of the world's greatest magicians) They treated him like a prodigy son whose abilities were beyond belief. These friends remain to this day his most cherished and respected friends for they had shown him hope when all he could see was dispair. This encouragement would allow him to overcome all things great and small.

Knowing now that this was indeed his life work he blazed along in the direction of a dream. His achievements he attributes mainly to his friends throughout the globe and the belief they have in Frederick and his dream. He says talent has very little to do with it for without the fire of life itself and friends to ignite the embers when they begin to fade. Frederick's Dream Weaver Hypnotic Show is a testimony really of the human spirit and what can be achieved with greater use of imagination.
