Downloading the software

1.1: How do I download the toolkit? 
From the "ftp://ftp.tislabs.com/pub/firewalls/toolkit/README" file:
    TIS has a registration policy for access to the toolkit which includes your acceptance of the terms and conditions of TIS FWTK software license. The TIS FWTK software license is attached. After you have read the FWTK software license, if you agree to abide by its restrictions, send a one word -- the word "accepted" -- e-mail message to fwtk-request@tislabs.com. The single word "accepted" (with no quotes) should be the entire *body* of the message (not the subject).  Based upon your acknowledgment of the terms and conditions of TIS FWTK software license, a responding e-mail will be sent to you and will contain the location of the FWTK source code and documentation.
Note that your host must support reverse name lookup (name matching an IP address) in order for the FTP to work.
 
1.2: Is there another method other than FTP for downloading the FWTK?
Currently, TIS does not have any other method, including FTP-by-mail or HTTP download, to get the toolkit or documentation.
 
 
1.3: What is the license agreement to use the toolkit?

PREAMBLE: Trusted Information Systems, Inc. (TIS) has developed the TIS Internet Firewall Toolkit (FWTK), a software kit for building and maintaining internetwork firewalls. Under the terms of this software license the FWTK is distributed in source code form, with all modules written in the C programming language and runs on many BSD UNIX derived platforms. The TIS Internet Firewall Toolkit is the product of TIS and is being made available to you under the terms and conditions of this TIS FWTK software license.
 
 

  1. LICENSE.

    2. TIS grants you a non-exclusive, non-transferable license for the TIS Firewall Toolkit programs (the "FWTK") and its associated documentation, subject to your acceptance of all of the terms and conditions contained in this software license. This license permits you to use, copy, and modify the FWTK solely for the internal, non-commercial, use of your organization.  The FWTK, if modified, must carry prominent notices stating that changes have been made, and the dates of any such changes.  All rights not expressly granted herein are reserved to TIS.
  2. LIMITATIONS ON LICENSE.

    3. a. You may only use, copy, and modify the FWTK as expressly provided for in this Agreement. You may not redistribute or otherwise make available the FWTK to another person, organization or entity. You must reproduce and include this Agreement, and TIS' copyright notices on any copy and its associated documentation even though said use, as required by this license, is restricted to your internal use only.
    b. The use of the FWTK is limited to your internal, non-commercial use only. Neither the FWTK, in its entirety, nor any part or element of the FWTK, is being licensed to you for use with, or in, any hardware, firmware, software, program or other product (i) which is sold; (ii) for which you receive any revenue; or (iii) which is provided by you (even for free) in conjunction with any commercial activity.
    c. You are prohibited from disclosing to any other person, organization or entity the on-line location of the FWTK source code and/or documentation which will be provided to you following your acceptance of the terms and conditions of this license
  3. NO TIS OBLIGATION.

    4. You are solely responsible for maintaining the FWTK and the security of the operating environment in which the FWTK may be used. You are solely responsible for all of your costs and expenses incurred in connection with your use of the FWTK or any application program hereunder, and TIS shall have no liability, obligation or responsibility therefor. TIS shall have no obligation to provide maintenance, support, upgrades, or new releases to you.
  4. NO WARRANTY OF PERFORMANCE.

    5. The FWTK and its associated documentation are licensed "AS IS" without warranty as to their performance, merchantability, or fitness for any particular purpose. You must accomplish a substantial amount of development, modification, installation and integration work on your own and with your own technical resources and talent before the FWTK will provide adequate security. The entire risk as to the results and performance of the FWTK is assumed by you. Should the FWTK prove defective, you assume the entire cost of all necessary servicing, repair, or correction of said defect and any consequences of such defect.
  5. LIMITATION OF LIABILITY.

    6. Neither TIS nor any other person who has been involved in the creation, production or delivery of the FWTK shall be liable to you or to any other person for any direct, indirect, special, incidental, consequential, or punitive damages, even if TIS has been advised of the possibility of such damages.
  6. TERM.

    7. The license granted hereunder is effective until terminated. This license shall automatically terminate without notice if you breach any of the provisions hereof. You may terminate this license at any time by destroying the FWTK, any compiled object code derived therefrom, and its associated documentation.
  7. GENERAL.

    8. a. This Agreement shall be governed by the laws of the State of Maryland.

2.1: What is the current version? 
The latest released/stable version is 2.1. It was released on February 27th, 1998. However, a second version of 2.1 was released on March 2nd, 1998 which fixes a minor bug.
 
2.2: What are the changes in the previous versions? 
You can look at an HTML version of the CHANGES file at changes.html, which lists the bug-fixes and enhancements in each version.
 
2.3: When will the next version be released? 
"As soon as it is ready".

TIS tries to release a new version often, but since it is a volunteer effort, it depends on the free time of the programmers.
 
 
3.1: How do I get support for the FWTK? 
TIS engineers continue to monitor the FWTK mailing lists, but no direct support is available. The fwtk-support list, which has been used for users of the FWTK to send problem reports to TIS, is available to anyone who would like to be added to it, and the user community will provide its own support.
 
 
3.2: How can I join the FWTK mailing list?
Subscribe to the FWTK users mailing list by sending a message to majordomo@ex.tis.com. In the body of the message put the following line:

After subscribing, you can e-mail the FWTK users mailing list by sending an e-mail to fwtk-users@ex.tis.com.
