INTRAVISION
Business has entered a new age of hyper information technologies. Under the right
direction, comes the opportunity to fully capitalize on present infrastructures as well as, "Plug and Place" the necessary resources to expand market share. In order to maximize impact a company should or better yet must be proactive in situations where competitors falter. This is a environment not for the faint of heart. Rather it is for those companies who can see clearly the hurdles as well as the rewards to be gained at the finish line. This can only be done with the right team in place to navigate the course. Also great advantage is obtained by the businesses that recognize and reward their champions. It is important to realize that here on the Internet is where the truly great Intranet visionaries are created and rewarded. At times companies shoot themselves in the foot discovering too late that this is not acquired by traditional educational institutes. You can judge more clearly the Internet developer's design and implementation abilities by the awards they have received by the Internet itself. Look at what they have made not what they simply put forth by dialogue. [ Which incidentally they should be more than happy to show off. Look for a Showcase of their skills.] It is highly suggested that a business look at Intranets for what they really are a brand new model of computing. Often corporations fail to fully comprehend the Internet / Intranet influence on the future of computing therefore we must elaborate on where we have come so far.
MAINFRAME COMPUTING
[ The One Dimensional Architecture ]
The first really evolutionary process in modern computing. It relied on huge central glass houses to subdivide end users who all shared commonly the the resources of the mainframe. Through a primitive interface it allowed limited interaction depending on bandwidth. Many companies are still depending heavily on mainframes for their legacy applications. It has been estimated that over 75% of all databases in use today are still using mainframes. This dilemma has been addressed largely by interim solutions. This can buy large corporations some time but is really only a short term fix. The real solution is the proper application of 3 dimensional technologies which can better utilize the resources of the systems both from the mainframe and the client perspective.
CLIENT - SERVER
[ The Two Dimensional Architecture ]
From the advent of the mainframe solution there became a obvious need for a new and improved model. The Client - Server model would take the application approach from the mainframe and transfer it to the desktop. This allowed for a much more flexible manipulation of the environment so that the client could have the best of both world's. Simply put it allowed for the client to work independently only calling upon the server for such tasks as shared file and print services. This combined with smaller, more powerful servers allowed for better specialization in workgroups.
Those processes which were server could be handled by the server. That which was client related could be handled by the client. Most of the business computing done presently is currently using this approach. ( Although far seeing companies are moving quickly to embrace "The 3 Dimensional Architecture". The reasons are numerous but perhaps the most pertinent is the fact that the 3 dimensional architecture is the most platform independent and scaleable. Another reason to be considered is the 3 dimensional architectures fiber fast development cycles.) It is in the Client - Server model that the intelligent server object provides services to a number of intelligent client objects. Even if we talk peer to peer we can still demarcate the processes to intelligent server and client objects. This 2 dimensional approaches shortcomings ushered in the 3 dimensional approach to computing. This model is rapidly being traded in for the 3 dimensional model namely that of "The Internet / Intranet Architecture".
INTERNET/INTRANET
[ The 3 Dimensional Architecture ]
This is the model that is gaining the most ground and has the most extensive abilities.
( Businesses are clamoring to it at literally a exponential rate ) Being truly a platform and model independent architecture it provides for its predecessors as part of its versatility. The beauty of this model is that it allows for full utilization of existing systems so that as the transfer is made there is a far shorter end user learning cycle. Also it is far more scaleable and allows for a more dynamic approach to distributed computing than ever before. The ability to take full advantage of this model of computing allows the visionary company to take full advantage of the 21st century today. It merges the technologies that work and shortens the development cycles needed to meet business goals. Another plus is its ability to allow any employee to potentially represent the company virtually at any time and any place. Companies that hesitate too long may find themselves out of the race with this one as building a presence is a artform unto itself. Simularly Intranet development has never been more mission critical for a company's present and future well being. Systems can now be looked at from a global perspective with literally no borders. The Internet derived technologies are allowing us to use our companies Intranets as a truer model of our minds.
The IntraVision - Stage 1
The Vision will be developed from the ground floor on up. This step by step process will begin from a city view, to a regional view, and so on as time allows. It is important to appreciate the stages needed as they are all stepping stones really to the main goal. Ideally a crack unit will focus entirely on Internet / Intranet technologies. Their task will be to find solutions to the business problems using the best and most appropiate tools available. They will create the benchmark which will be used as the model for corporate Extranets/Intranets to use as a measuring stick for where the companies are, and where they should go to position themselves for maximum effectiveness. This effectiveness in focusing its resources will pay significant dividends in both the short term as well as long term projects. A further amplification is supplied for completeness to assist in visualizing the modules required.
